Drugs or alcohol played a role in almost half of the domestic violence cases Hands of Hope worked with these past three years.

As we enter October which nationally is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and as a member of Wabash County AACTION, it is important to note the connection.

Hands of Hope, a division of Family Service Society, works diligently to break the cycle of domestic violence, as well as educate the community about this crime. Wabash County AACTION - (Against Alcohol, Controlled Substances and Tobacco in Our Neighborhoods) works in coordination with Hands of Hope on this issue.

During this month, please take time to think about domestic violence. Think about the types of violence that include physical, emotional, verbal, financial and sexual. Then think about how adding drugs and/or alcohol to an already volatile situation might escalate the violence.

Hands of Hope, a division of Family Service Society, continues to encounter both victims and abusers who use or abuse alcohol and/or other drugs.

As you talk with your children about not using drugs or alcohol, also talk to them about the devastating impact domestic violence can have on their lives. It is important for children to understand that the abuse of drugs and alcohol will lead to destruction in their lives, but also will domestic violence.

If you or someone you know is involved in a violent relationship encourage them to call the Hands of Hope 24-hour helpline at 1-800-434-8973. Hands of Hope, a division of Family Service Society, Inc. is a United Fund of Wabash County Agency.
